canon d40 or g16

hi ive got a strange question to ask . ive just given up my canon aei system to move to digital photography but im not sure what to get .
id like to get a d40 or d50 used or something like a g16 compact pro camera but after so long with reflex cameras
iknow they are 2 different things but im not sure which one .
canon says that the g16 coulb be an alternative to DSLR cameras so im not sure can you help
