Nikon Df

Pros: the perfect camera for travel; lightweight body, very good quality of jpg, battery life

Cons: battery cover comes off: never try to change the battery during a walk; the price

Opinion: The review is based on the experience with the previous equipment: from the Russian range-finder zorki 4 through DDR-made practica MTL3, and finally: Nikons: F601m, F100, FM2, FM3a, D700, D5500, D7100. Unfortunately, the images conveyed by diapositives (Fuji velvia100, 50; provia 100) shown on a large screen (160 cm) cannot be compared with the digital images on 30 inch monitor. From all respects the former make a better impression, at least regarding the color tones and making an impression of multi-plan views. The photos shown in my modest galleries here do not reflect the overall attractiveness of dias. Moreover, Fuji reala 100 gave beautiful color tones. Since now both velvia and reala disappeared we have to use digital cameras. They should be compared only with their digital counterparts. Nikon D700 gives very good images of human faces and close lying subjects. Since its jpg s are unusable it is very inconvenient for travel photography. We have to reckon with spending hundreds of hours at PP. I have also tried D750 for 3 days and happily returned it to the shop, since 10 % of images were unsharp (with nikkor 24-120 f4*). The jpgs were very precise but mostly ugly and unattractive. Nikon D7100 cannot be used indoors without a flash, since max ISO is ca 800. This is a good camera for a good weather. I guess that D8XX will be similar, but I have no experience. Nikon Df is free of these drawbacks It can be used as a travel camera in all cases: outdoor and indoor. The jpg files at standard settings are attractive and, simultaneously, highly correct. Be careful with raw files-they are huge. The peculiar feature of Nikon Df is very accurate and pleasing rendering of green shades, which is a crucial factor in the landscape photography. In contrast, all other cameras mentioned above render the green colors of nature incorrectly. The worst tones appear during the sunsets. Nikon Df is a tactile camera; the change of settings can be done without putting the body to our eyes. This is vitally important for our safety, when we walk along the stones of mountain ridges , cross the rocky saddles, traverse the hillsides. On the other hand the constant change of settings is indispensable in forests, e.g. going along levadas of Madeira, we have to introduce the exposure compensation carefully (e.g -.7) and have a constant control over ISO. ************************************************************************************************************************ * Now I know that this lens was in fact spoiled, just D750 disclosed its defficiency; this lens failed to work some months later. Thus, this lens should not be bought used, it is very delicate, the reason is VR. I am withdrawing hereby my criticism towards AF in D750, but jpgs are much worse than those from Df.
