canon_40Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM

Pros: Build quality, sharpness and lightness.

Cons: MAF not always fast

Opinion: I was looking for an optics, to be alternated with the 24mm STM on the APS C Canon 200d, which was as light and sharp as the 24, but more suited to portraits and family scenes. I tried the 50 mm STM but I made it after a while in favor of the 40mm STM, with which I found myself better because it was sharper, versatile and with AF faster. With the 40, which on aps c has an actual focal point of 64mm, I made beautiful portraits with a pleasant and soft blur: it is also ideal for photographing groups of people (children, friends, family, etc.). It returns very beautiful and sharp photographs of landscapes as well. Great, like the 24 for videos.

canon_50_f1-8stmCanon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM

Pros: Lightness, build quality

Cons: AF and sharpness not up to other fixed STM targets.

Opinion: Taken from alternating with the 24mm STM on APS C Canon 200d, I decided to replace it after a while in favor of the 40mm STM lens. I preferred the latter in the end because it was sharper and faster in focus, with a good blur even for portraits. Despite the greater aperture of diaphragm 1.8 of the 50 STM, compared to 2.8 of 24 and 40, even in low light conditions i was not entirely satisfied. Good lens suitable for portraits but less for family scenes or among friends with more people.
