I lavori di costruzione del Rifugio Frassati sono iniziati nel 2008 ad opera dei ragazzi dell'Operazione Mato Grosso, un movimento di giovani provenienti da tutta Italia, che hanno lavorato gratuitamente per tre estati, fino all'inaugurazione nel 2011. I trasporti dei materiali necessari sono stati fatti quasi interamente a spalla dai ragazzi. Il rifugio è gestito da volontari. Tutto il ricavato della gestione viene destinato per sostenere i progetti attivi nelle missioni dell'Operazione Mato Grosso in Perù, Bolivia, Brasile ed Ecuador. Il rifugio è stato dedicato al beato Pier Giorgio Frassati, morto a 24 anni per una poliomelite fulminante. Pier Giorgio, oltre ad essere un amante della montagna, nella sua breve vita spese le sue energie a favore dei più poveri e bisognosi.
