L'Università di Coimbra é una delle più antiche d'Europa: fondata nel 1290 a Lisbona da Dom Dinis, l'Università fu trasferita definitivamente a Coimbra nel 1537 nella sede del Paço Real Medieval. Attraversando la Porta Férrea ci si trova di fronte al maestoso Paço das Escolas. Tra i monumenti imperdibili ci sono: la Biblioteca Joanina, la Pris?o Medieval e Académica, la Sala de Armas, la Sala dos Capelos, la Sala do Exame Privado e la Capela de S. Miguel.Il Pátio e il Paço das Escolas sono dominati dall'iconica silhouette della Torre da Universidade (1728-1733). La Torre ospita un orologio del 1860 e quattro campane che, con i loro rintocchi, scandiscono la vita universitaria a Coimbra. La più famosa delle quattro campane della Torre da Universidade è quella rivolta verso il Mondego, soprannominata "A Cabra". Particolare menzione merita la Biblioteca Joanina (1717-1728), situata nel patio della Facoltà di Diritto e ammirata in tutto il mondo per il stile marcatamente rococò che ne ha fatto una delle biblioteche barocche più belle d'Europa.
