Questa piazza triangolare con caffetterie e negozi si trova ai piedi del Ponte di Santa Clara, sulla splendida riva del Baixa, distretto di Coimbra. La statua di Joaquim António de Aguiar, con la penna in mano, rappresenta la firma nel 1833 di un decreto che vieta gli ordini religiosi in tutto il Portogallo (il risultato di un liberalismo anticlericale che aveva infuso il pensiero politico in tutta l' Europa di quel periodo).
