Il Santuario si trova a un cinque chilometri dal centro, sulla collina del Monte Espinho e oltre ad essere uno dei principali richiami turistici di Braga, dichiarato Immobile di Pubblico Interesse, costituisce uno dei maggiori centri di pellegrinaggio del Portogallo. La chiesa si trova a 116 metri d'altezza, alla fine di una monumentale scalinata in cui vi sono svariate cappelle che rappresentano la Vai Crucis, fontane e sculture. Si può accedere fin ai piedi della scalinata sia con autobus di linea sia con mezzo proprio e, una volta lì, risalire a piedi gli scalini o prendere la funivia. L'attuale chiesa s'iniziò a costruire nel 1784 ma già esisteva dal XIV secolo nel medesimo luogo una precedente cappella dedicata a Santa Cruz che fu ricostruita varie volte. La costruzione del tempio attuale fu incoraggiata da Rodrigo de Moura Telles, vescovo di Braga, e disegnata dall'architetto Carlos Amarante in stile neoclassico (fu uno dei primi tempi portoghesi in tale stile).
