La devozione a sant'Antonino nasce per il ritrovamento a mare della statua da parte di alcuni pescatori di Vergine Maria. La tradizione vuole che la statua del santo sia di proprietà dei pescatori di Vergine Maria, avendola trovata in mare, ma non potendola conservare, la diedero in custodia ai cugini dell'Arenella. All'atto della restituzione questi opposero molte resistenze, ma alla fine cedettero e organizzarono la traversata. Ma appena scesi in mare si scatenò un fortunale e dovettero rientrare in porto. Si disposero quindi alla restituzione per via terrestre, ma ugualmente si scatenò un temporale improvviso che li costrinse a un precipitoso rientro. Da ciò argomentarono che il santo voleva rimanere all'Arenella. Dopo numerose dispute si raggiunse un accordo: il santo rimaneva all'Arenella, ma ogni anno doveva essere portato in processione a Vergine Maria. La tradizione ,o l'accordo, fino a oggi è stata mantenuta e nel mese di giugno una nutrita e variopinta processione marinara accompagna il santo a Vergine Maria, fino alla punta di Passatello, dove viene salutato con fuochi artificiali.
