Sì, il giovane (juv.) ha il rosso sulla testa a differenza dell'adulto che ce l'ha sulla nuca. Nel picchio rosso mezzano il rosso è sulla testa, ma non ha il contorno nero, il mustaccio nero non raggiunge il becco come qui, inoltre ha il petto striato.
