Oibò, il mio 'amico' Francesco di Marco Datini, mercante nato e vissuto fra la seconda metà del 1300 e i primi anni del 1400 nella ridente (si fa per dire) e operosa città di Prato (detto infatti anche il mercante di Prato) e al quale la mia città molto deve, come molto deve anche Firenze (l'ospedale degli Innocenti è in gran parte opera sua, nel senso che molti sono stati i suo finanziamenti). Tant'è che la statua egregiamente ripresa dal mio concittadino Salvatore ed al quale faccio i miei più sinceri complimenti, fa la sua bella figura ne bel mezzo della piazza del Comune, quasi a proteggerei tesori che sono costuditi nell'adiacente Palazzo Pretorio. Se poi sia stato veramente l'inventore della cambiale non lo sappiamo sicuramente, di sicuro c'è il fatto che ha reso tale tipo di pagamento molto comune essendo forse il mercante più intraprendente della sua epoca in terra di Toscana (ma non lo dite ai fiorentini, perchè troveranno il modo di dirvi che essendo comunque Prato sotto il dominio di Fiorenza, il merito del successo di Francesco di Marco Datini, va alla città gigliata. Maledetto campanilismo toscano).
