Gli ksar sono caratteristici villaggi fortificati, formati da abitazioni, granai-castelli fatti di sabbia rossa, legno e tronchi di bambù, che venivano costruiti su piccole alture nei pressi di oasi o corsi d'acqua allo scopo di proteggere i raccolti della comunità dalle scorribande e saccheggi dei predoni o delle tribù nomadi. Nelle valli ad est di Marrakech se ne vedono molti, alcuni abitati ben conservati e restaurati, altri che purtroppo sono in abbandono e si stanno letteralmente disfacendo. Al loro interno la vita è scandita da ritmi ed abitudini discrete, gesti ed attività semplici e si respira un'atmosfera ed un fascino antico.
