La grande impresa decorativa promossa da Maria Giovanna Battista di Savoia-Nemours al piano nobile del castello a partire dal 1702 comprende quattro soffitti dipinti da Domenico Guidobono, che corrispondono agli ambienti indicati negli inventari come Camera dei valletti a piè (oggi Sala Guidobono), Camera di Madama Reale, Gabinetto cinese e Camera degli specchi (oggi veranda sud). Gli studi condotti negli ultimi anni da Francesca Filippi e Giuseppe Dardanello hanno consentito di precisare meglio le funzioni di ogni ambiente, la cronologia del cantiere, i modelli di riferimento e i contenuti iconografici delle pitture. Tra il 2000 e il 2005, le indagini stratigrafiche realizzate da Alessandra Perugini e i restauri eseguiti dai laboratori Nicola e Rava hanno restituito alle superfici pittoriche e agli arredi plastici in stucco e in legno i tratti della freschezza e della vivacità originaria.
