A San Marco d'Alunzio. E' una festa tra il pagano ed il religioso, caratterizzata da 33 personaggi (il numero 33 rievoca gli anni del Cristo), incappucciati con dei sai blu (una volta erano di color grigio, il colore della cenere...), detti "Babbaluti" cioè "Penitenti", scalzi ma aventi i "Piruna", pesanti calze di lana di pecora lavorati a mano. I Babbaluti hanno la funzione di scortare la vara col Cristo in Croce (scolpito nel 1652, e recentemente restaurato) ed un quadro raffigurante l'Addolorata trafitta da sette spade, appartenente al XVIII secolo. I Babbaluti sono dislocati alle quattro stanghe del pesante fercolo, mentre uno di loro procede all'indietro, rivolgendo sempre lo sguardo verso la Madre ed il Figlio in croce: tutti insieme con passo cadenzato, ripetono incessantemente la frase "Signuri, misericordia, pietà!"...I BABBALUTI escono dall'antica "chiesa del Crasile", dove si sono cambiati d'abito, indossando i sai che vengono restituiti dopo la cerimonia: in tal modo questi sai sono stati indossati più e più volte, per decenni, sempre quelli, forse indossati dai loro stessi padri od addirittura nonni. I "Babbaluti" non sono solo uomini...ma in mezzo a loro ci sono anche delle donne...(per devozione, per chiedere una grazia, o per ringraziare chi la grazia l'ha ricevuta). A volte essi indossano guanti per non farsi riconoscere. Intanto il Crocifisso è stato portato nella piazza antistante la chiesa dell'Ara Coeli... ...I Babbaluti son giunti alla chiesa, ma prima di recarsi alla vara, a coppie devono prima inginocchiarsi e baciare in terra all'inizio della scala d'accesso di una porta secondaria della chiesa, detta Porta Fausa (Porta Falsa), quindi uscire dalla porta principale della chiesa dopo il necessario rito di "pentimento e rinascita", e così giungere davanti alla vara per poi inginocchiarsi davanti ad essa. ...qui il Sacerdote pronuncia la sua predica...in un profondo religioso silenzio...aiutato da un microfono (disturbato solo dalle decine di "click"...provenienti dai numerosissimi fotografi). Il parroco, terminata la sua orazione...da il via alla processione, coi Babbaluti che caricano sulle loro spalle il pesante fercolo... si procede per le vie del paese. ...si rientra in chiesa...la processione così termina, col Crocifisso che viene posto nella navata principale dell'Ara Coeli, ed inseparabile il quadro dell'Addolorata ai suoi piedi...con i fedeli che sopraggiungono in massa per un altro saluto ancora....
