La storica costruzione, prima porta romana, poi casaforte e castello medievale degli Acaia e successivamente dimora delle Madame Reali Maria Cristina di Francia e Maria Giovanna Battista di Savoia-Nemours, in epoca risorgimentale ospitò l'Aula del Senato Subalpino dal 1848 al 1861 e quindi accolse il Senato Italiano dal 1861 al 1864. L'ultima seduta si tenne il 9 dicembre 1864 con l'approvazione della legge per il trasferimento della capitale da Torino a Firenze.
