, 1/50 f/2.0, ISO 1600, hand held. Fenghuang, China.

A former Ya Zhai Fu Ren who's 98 years old, in Fenghuang, Hunan, China. Ya Zhai Fu Ren is a unique Chinese term to describe the wives of mountain bandit leaders, literally, it means "lady held in the mountain stronghold" Throughout chaotic times in the Chinese history, whenever the government is weak, outlaws would hold up in the country's vast rural areas, often in mountains, building up their own forces, to raid nearby trade routes or villages for food, money and women, kind of like mafia in the rural areas. Young and beautiful girls who were abducted in the bandit raids were often presented by the bandits to their leaders for marriage. This lady in the picture lived in a Miao tribe in Hunan, China. She was abducted about 80 years ago from her hometown to the remote mountains of Fenghuang. Miao is a Chinese ethnic minority who live in the mountains between the Provinces of Hunan, Guangdong and Sichuan.
