Le iene non sono solo spazzini opportunisti ma sono anche abili cacciatrici forse anche più dei leoni. Per abbattere uno gnù adulto due o tre iene bastano. Attaccano la preda mordendola nelle parti basse sino a sfinirla, cominciano a sbranarla quando questa è ancora viva iniziando dalle parti molli. La loro mascella sviluppa una forza che è maggiore di quella del leone e il loro stomaco è in grado di digerire anche le ossa triturate.
