Troppo grande era il rispetto della natura in questo tracciato di alta montagna. Delle condizioni meteorologiche favorevoli nell'inverno 1909/10 permisero di mantenere aperta la tratta già realizzata da St. Moritz fino alla vetta sull'Ospizio Bernina, nonostante la neve alta. Così nel 1910, dopo che la linea ferroviaria era stata costruita sino a Tirano, la direzione si procurò uno spazzaneve, che venne impiegato per la prima volta già nell'inverno 1910/11. Con questa meraviglia della tecnica si risparmiarono costi notevoli per la rimozione della neve. Già nel 1913, grazie alla costruzione di varie strutture protettive, la linea del Bernina poté restare in funzione per tutto l'anno. Ancora oggi lo spazzaneve a motore automatico «Xrot d 9213» viene impiegato in caso di copiose nevicate e per eventi speciali turistici: unico al mondo nel suo genere
