Dear John, I think there's nothing better than colors and trying to have the "right" ones, complimentary or same ones in different part of the pic and so on. b & w emphasizes features but i see it as an "cutting easier" way to get it all to reducing the sum of colors or no colors and the shades in between but i do like it the same.
