I Desia Kondh sono a mio parere una delle tribù più interessanti dell' Orissa per l' attaccamento alle loro tradizioni e per i caratteristici tatuaggi facciali che presentano ancora molte delle ragazze giovani che abitano almeno i villaggi più isolati. Ci sono varie interpretazioni dei tatuaggi, diversi per ogni villaggio ed ognuno con un suo significato specifico. Tra le varie interpretazioni mi affascina particolarmente quella che, secondo cui i tatuaggi schematizzano il volto e le vibrisse di una tigre perché, secondo un'antica superstizione, le donne Desia non tatuate in questo modo potrebbero facilmente sviluppare la capacità di trasformarsi in tigri.
