Di prima mattina incontriamo tre grossi ippopotami uno dei quali reca una profonda ferita sul fianco destro. La cicatrice sul corpo del maschio lascia intuire quanto il contrasto sia stato cruento, probabilmente determinato da una contesa legata alla difesa del territorio. Il regno di un maschio dominante, se è costituito da un corso d'acqua, si estende per 50-100 metri. Abbiamo subito l'impressione di trovarci nel bel mezzo di una lotta che ci vede spettatori indesiderati. L'Hippo ferito manifesta infatti il proprio nervosismo con il classico atteggiamento intimidatorio a fauci spalancate.
