La Lepre irlandese differisce da quella europea soprattutto nella lunghezza delle orecchie molto più corte e la coda che é completamente bianca, mentre l'europea é bianca si, ma con la parte superiore nera. Nel 1993 però é stato scoperto che alcune lepri irlandesi hanno la parte superiore della coda scura, da notare che la Lepre bruna (europea) esiste nell'isola soltanto nel Nord Irlanda; potrebbe essere che sta avvenendo un incrocio. La Lepre irlandese é una sottospecie derivante direttamente dalla Lepre artica; l'Irlanda é il solo posto dove la Lepre artica (o una sua sottospecie) vive in clima é piuttosto temperato: é infatti interessante vedere come in altre regioni europee più fredde come le Alpi o il Nord della Gran Bretagna questa lepre sia stata rimpiazzata da quella bruna. In Irlanda questa lepre muta parzialmente in bianco, mentre quelle artiche lo fanno completamente. Possono raggiungere la magnifica velocità di 48 km/h e possono fare dei balzi di 3 metri di lunghezza. Vive nelle zone aperte nei campi erbosi o nelle zone paludose; al contrario dei conigli non fanno delle tane nel terreno, ma si riposano tra la vegetazione. Hanno un ottimo senso della vista e dell'olfatto: possono vedere una persona in movimento ad una distanza di alcune centinaia di metri. Sono prevalentemente notturne o crepuscolari, ma capita che si possano vedere anche alla luce del giorno.
