Willhelm Brasse è morto all'età di 94 ammi nell'ottobre del 2012. Nel settembre del 1939, in seguito all'invasione della Polonia da parte dell'esercito nazista rifiutò di unirsi ai nazisti e cercò di scappare in Francia. Al confine tra Polonia e Ungheria fu catturato e incarcerato per quattro mesi per la tentata fuga. Continuò a rifiutare ogni richiesta di dichiarare lealtà a Hitler. Nell'agosto del 1940 i nazisti ne decretarono la deportazione nei campi di concentramento da poco aperti di Auschwitz. Considerata la sua abilità con la fotografia, fu destinato alla sezione del campo che si occupava di documentare l'arrivo dei deportati e di realizzarne foto per renderli più facilmente identificabili. A Brasse fu anche ordinato di fotografare alcuni prigionieri che interessavano per le loro caratteristiche a Josef Mengele, il medico nazista che all'interno di Auschwitz eseguiva "esperimenti" utilizzando cavie umane. Verso la fine della guerra, i responsabili del campo chiesero ai fotografi di distruggere tutto il materiale fotografico che avevano realizzato, ma buona parte di questi si rifiutò di farlo. Nel complesso gli storici stimano che ad Auschwitz furono scattate almeno 200mila foto di altrettanti prigionieri. Moltissime furono distrutte poco prima della definitiva capitolazione del regime nazista. Un quinto di quelle immagini è arrivato fino ai giorni nostri. Le foto sono conservate nel museo di Auschwitz-Birkenau e duemila di queste sono esposte al pubblico. Parte dell'archivio fotografico è conservata presso il memoriale dell'Olocausto. In questa stanza si vedono alcune delle persone che sono state internate e uccise ad Auschwitz. #Olocausto #BiancoeNero
