La bombina orientalis è un rospo di taglia medio-piccola la cui testa ha forma rotondeggiante. Gli occhi sono sporgenti e la pupilla è a forma di cuore oppure triangolare. Le zampe(sia quelle posteriori che quelle anteriori), sono palmate. Il colore della pelle varia dal verde acceso, al verde scuro, al marrone,esistono anche esemplari la cui colorazione è a chiazze marroni su base verde o viceversa. Caratteristica peculiare di questa specie è la colorazione del ventre,rosso-nera o arancio-nera. I tubercoli presenti sul dorso sono i responsabili dell'emissione di una sostanza leggermente tossica (per questo si raccomanda di lavarsi immediatamente le mani dopo averli toccati),che risulta comunque innocua per noi uomini e che può portare al massimo a qualche lieve irritazione. Il dimorfismo sessuale ,a detta degli esperti, non è netto, solo durante il periodo degli amori compaiono sugli avambracci del maschio i cosiddetti "calli nuziali",atti a favorire un accoppiamento acquatico di tipo lombare.
