Lunghezza ala anteriore mm. 15-20
Descrizione: il maschio di questa farfalla, nella forma tipica, presenta colorazione rame con riflessi viola e macchie nere mentre la femmina è scura di color bruno-marrone e arancio. Nella forma gordius, presente sulle Alpi occidentali, il maschio è arancione-rame con leggeri riflessi porpora mentre la femmina è arancione con macchie marroni. In entrambe le forme il rovescio dell'ala anteriore e grigio-arancione mentre quello dell'ala posteriore prevalentemente grigio, con macchie nere.
Maschio: colore arancio con disegni puntiformi neri. Riflesso violaceo più o meno intenso, in particolare nelle ali anteriori.
Femmina: colore arancio con macchie puntiformi nere. Velatura mera più o meno intensa per lo più nelle sole ali posteriori, ove lascia scoperta una fascia submarginale arancio.
Rovescio: anteriori arancio con macchie puntiformi nere simili al dritto, ma più piccole e nette. Posteriori grigio chiare con numerose macchie puntiformi nere a fascia submarginale arancio.
Distribuzione: tutta Italia tranne la Sardegna e l'Elba.
Habitat: specie mesofila, si rinviene nei prati e nelle radure dal piano basale a quello montano, sino a circa 1900 metri s.l.m.
Generazioni annuali: una con sfarfallamento da giugno ad agosto, secondo la quota.
Piante nutrici: Rumus scrutatus, Rumus acetosa, Rumus acetosella.
