I Surma amano decorarsi con le pitture corporali ma anche con le scarificazioni che hanno una funzione sia rituale che estetica. Per quanto a noi possa anche fare una certa impressione per loro è un' attività perfettamente normale: con un una spina sollevano un lembo di pelle che poi tagliano con una lametta, cicatrizzandosi sulla pelle si formano dei cheloidi che rimangono in rilievo.. E' un atto che fa parte della loro cultura e quando smetteranno di scarificarsi vorrà dire che la trasformazione avrà preso il sopravvento e non sempre, per le popolazioni tribali, questi repentini cambiamenti, sono forieri di novità positive.... A Gennaio andremo a visitare una tribù del Sudan del Sud che fa largo utilizzo delle scarificazioni sul viso e sul corpo di cui si sa abbastanza poco e non vedo l' ora di partire...
