Da Tarquinia, percorrendo la strada che porta a Monte Romano, dopo circa sette chilometri, una deviazione sulla sinistra conduce all'antica città etrusca. La città etrusca di Tarquinia (in etrusco Tarchna) era situata a circa 10 chilometri dalla costa, dove era ubicata Gravisca, il porto principale, importante emporio del Mediterraneo. L'abitato che occupava, in estensione, c.a. 140 ettari, era situato su un colle, denominato Pian di Civita, dominante la valle del fiume Marta, emissario del lago di Bolsena e navigabile dal mare fino alla città. Pian di Civita è separato dalla costa dal lungo e parallelo colle dei Monterozzi, sede delle necropoli storiche, sul cui sperone occidentale si insedia la città medievale di Corneto, l'odierna Tarquinia. La felice posizione geografica contribuì alla sua fioritura ed alla sua affermazione in quanto l'abitato etrusco aveva agevoli contattianche con il retroterra attraverso la vallata del fiume Marta. Il suo territorio si trovava in posizione strategica tra le aree di influenza di altre due potenti città-stato etrusche: Cerveteri a Sud e Vulci a Nord. Sul pianoro di Pian di Civita si può ammirare il basamento del tempio denominato "Ara della Regina", risalente al sec. IV a.c. della cui decorazione fittile facevano parte i Cavalli Alati, oggi esposti al Museo Archeologico Nazionale Tarquiniense. (info:http://www.tarquiniaturismo.it/)
