Da quando l'uomo ha imparato a dominare l'acqua, la terra, l'aria e il fuoco, in questa cittadina ci sono stati artigiani che hanno saputo creare forme e colori in modo originale. Da quando l'uomo cominciò a vivere non solo di caccia, ma anche di agricoltura, iniziò a forgiare grandi recipienti o piccoli vasi plasmati con un impasto nero-grigiastro con decorazioni geometriche o con figure animali o umane stilizzate. Furono gli arabi, durante la loro dominazione in Sicilia, ad insegnare agli artigiani calatini l'invetriatura della ceramica, e quindi furono loro ad usarla prima che si diffondesse nel resto dell'Italia.
