La Gonepteryx rhamni, detta anche cedronella, è una farfalla piuttosto comune nelle aree boscose di tutta Europa. è una delle specie primaverili che nel nostro Paese compaiono per prime alla ricerca di fiori e attira l'attenzione per l'elegante forma delle ali e per i colori delicati. Il dimorfismo sessuale è marcato: le ali del maschio sono di colore giallo vivo, mentre quelle della femmina sono biancastre con riflessi verdognoli. I bruchi si sviluppano tra giugno e luglio su frangola, spincervino e specie affini. I nuovi adulti nascono in estate; restano attivi per pochi giorni, dopo di che entrano in una sorta di pausa estiva per risvegliarsi in autunno e, poco dopo, rientrare in stato di riposo per superare l'inverno. Durante il volo gli insetti emanano dei feromoni, ovvero delle sostanze volatili, tipiche di ciascuna specie, che costituiscono degli stimoli per le ulteriori fasi del corteggiamento. In questo caso il volo è durato qualche decina di secondi prima che le farfalle sparissero all'orizzonte, quindi la femmina ha probabilmente accettato il corteggiamento. .
