Brillante, studioso, dotato di mirabile ingegno e di estro artistico Gian Raffaele Balestrino era un enfant prodige e fu pianista e direttore d’orchestra del Carlo Felice. Gian Raffaele, inoltre, era anche un giovane semplicemente amante della vita e delle sue bellezze ma il suo destino amaro non gli diede scampo. Infatti, in un giorno di luglio del 1896, mentre si trovava in una villa di famiglia a Quarto, Gian Raffaele decise, senza dir nulla a nessuno, di andare a fare una remata in barca in compagnia del suo cameriere che era un suo coetaneo. Il segreto su quella ragazzata fu mantenuto ma il giovane aveva preso freddo e così si ammalò senza che se ne conoscesse la causa. La gita in mare ebbe infine un esito fatale per lui: Gian Raffaele si aggravò in fretta e la polmonite pose fine alla sua breve vita in appena 5 giorni.Il monumento funebre della famiglia Balestrino si trova nel Porticato Semicircolare del Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno, la scultura è opera di Francesco Fasce che la ultimò nell’anno 1900. La tragica figura dolente posta sul sepolcro ha le fattezze di Carlotta Bozzano, madre del giovane defunto.
