Nel Rione XI - Sant'Angelo,ncircondata dai palazzi un tempo appartenuti alla nobile famiglia Mattei, che diede anche il nome alla piazza, realizzata tra il 1581 e il 1588 su progetto di Giacomo Della Porta (1533-1602). Tra ricche decorazioni in marmi policromi, quattro fanciulli in bronzo cavalcano dei delfini su vasche a forma di conchiglia scolpite dal fiorentino Taddeo Landini (1550-1596), e dal 1658 "giocano" con le tartarughe, aggiunte alla fontana da Gian Lorenzo Bernini nel 1658. Le quattro tartarughe furono purtroppo oggetto di una serie di atti vandalici e furti a cui seguirono fortunatamente i ritrovamenti; tuttavia nel 1981 il Comune di Roma decise di sostituirle definitivamente con delle copie e di trasportare le originali ai Musei Capitolini dove ancora oggi si trovano. La storia della fontana e' legata a una leggenda romantica. Si narra che il duca Mattei, amante del gioco d'azzardo, un giorno perse in un colpo solo l'intero patrimonio familiare. Il futuro suocero si rifiuto', quindi, di concedergli in sposa la figlia. In risposta, il duca fece realizzare in una sola notte questa magnifica fontana. Il giorno seguente invito' a palazzo la promessa sposa e suo padre per mostrar loro l'opera, ed esclamo': "Ecco che cosa e' in grado di realizzare in poche ore uno squattrinato Mattei!". In ricordo dell'episodio, fece murare la finestra da cui si affacciarono per ammirare la fontana. Non tutti sanno che esiste una fontana gemella assolutamente identica. Si tratta di una copia, grande quanto l'originale, che oggi trova posto nello Huntington Park di San Francisco, dove e' amata e conosciuta. La copia e' stata realizzata agli inizi del Novecento e acquistata da William e Ethel Crocker per la propria dimora. Nel 1954, i quattro figli Crocker donarono la loro copia della Fontana delle Tartarughe alla citta' di San Francisco e cosi' venne collocata proprio in Huntington Park.
