L'androgino angelo della Tomba Oneto rappresenta, sotto molti aspetti, il "punto di rottura" storico nel passaggio da una visione positivista della morte, che trovava nel realismo il linguaggio più congeniale, a quella permeata di dubbi che sfocerà nel clima decadente-simbolista. In questo processo di rinnovamento l'angelo perde la connotazione cristiana di guida verso il paradiso per divenire testimone del mistero del nulla: l'angelo Oneto non offre alcun gesto consolatorio, ma appare lontano e imperturbabile. Monteverde, inoltre, conferisce all'angelo sembianze femminili facendo così emergere il dualismo Eros - Thanatos che, da tempo, la scultura funeraria cercava di filtrare attraverso le sublimate raffigurazioni di virtù e di dolenti.
