Più noto come Yi Sun-sin è un celeberrimo comandante navale ed eroe nazionale coreano del XVI secolo. Vissuto tra il 1545 e il 1598, è considerato un genio militare per non aver mai perso una singola battaglia durante la guerra di Imijin, pur trovandosi spesso in grave inferiorità numerica, contro i giapponesi. A lui si deve l'invenzione delle "navi tartaruga" (Geobukseon), le prime navi corazzate della storia (perché dotate di un guscio a prova di proiettile e di una prua a forma di testa di drago). Chungmukong non è il suo vero nome, ma un prestigioso titolo postumo che significa "Duca della lealtà e della cavalleria", conferitogli in segno di rispetto per i suoi servigi resi allo stato. Oggi la sua figura è onorata in tutto il paese: questa statua ad esempio sorge nella piazza Gwanghwamum nel cuore di Seul e la sua immagine è rappresentata anche sulla banconota da 100KWon. A lui sono intitolati anche i cacciatorpediniere di classe, appunto, Chngmugong Yi Sun-sin della marina sudcoreana.
