In Vietnam, they are one of the country’s officially recognized ethnic minorities and mainly live in the northern highland provinces such as Hà Giang Province, Lào Cai Province, and Sơn La Province. These mountainous landscapes have strongly influenced their traditional way of life and agricultural practices. Hmong communities can also be found in other parts of the world, including the United States, France, and Australia, due to migration and resettlement, especially after the conflicts in Southeast Asia during the 20th century. Despite living abroad, many Hmong families maintain close cultural ties to their ancestral traditions. The Hmong have a rich cultural heritage that includes oral storytelling, music, and important festivals such as the Hmong New Year, a celebration marked by family gatherings, games, and traditional performances. Music plays a central role in their culture, particularly through the qeej, a bamboo mouth organ used in ceremonies and rituals. They are especially known for their vibrant and intricate traditional clothing, often decorated with colorful floral patterns, detailed embroidery, batik designs, and silver jewelry. These garments are not only beautiful but also express identity, as different Hmong subgroups can be recognized by specific colors and patterns. Today, many Hmong in Vietnam continue to preserve their language and customs while adapting to modern social and economic changes.
