Nel bosco sopra la corteccia di un grande albero caduto ho trovato queste due tipologie di formiche: 1.Camponotus vagus che sono grosse formiche nere e sono tra le formiche più grandi d'Europa. Nidificano scavando gallerie nel legno morto o ammalato, 2.Temnothorax sono formiche minuscole e specializzate nel vivere proprio nella corteccia o in piccole cavità dei tronchi dove vivono le formiche più grandi Sono chiamate spesso "formiche ospiti" o "opportuniste". Cercano di passare inosservate, ma la formica grande che ho fotografato ne ha intercettata una, considerandola una preda o una minaccia territoriale. Il tronco caduto è un vero e proprio "condominio" dove diverse specie competono per lo spazio; quella che ho ripreso è una vera e propria guerra di confine tra i giganti del legno e i piccoli abitanti della corteccia. Purtroppo anche nel microcosmo come anche nel nostro "mediocosmo" ci sono continuamente conflitti.
