Il Castello Estense, noto anche come Castello di San Michele, è il simbolo di Ferrara e uno dei rari esempi di castello europeo che conserva ancora il suo fossato pieno d'acqua. Costruito nel 1385 per volere di Niccolò II d'Este su progetto dell'architetto Bartolino da Novara, nacque come possente fortezza difensiva per proteggere i signori dalle rivolte popolari.
