Riserva naturale Bosco della Mesola Delta del Po (FE)Con una superficie di 1.058 ettari, la Riserva Naturale del Gran Bosco della Mesola rappresenta uno degli ultimi e meglio conservati residui di bosco di pianura, memoria delle antiche foreste che si trovavano fino a qualche secolo fa lungo la costa adriatica. Si tratta, inoltre, della macchia mediterranea più a nord in Europa ed oggi è la più estesa area boscata del ferrarese, che può essere facilmente visitata in autonomia a piedi o in bicicletta seguendo i percorsi autorizzati che permettono di avvistare cervi e daini. La Riserva, infatti, ospita il Cervo autoctono delle dune, unico discendente del Cervo Nobile che popolava originariamente la Pianura Padana. Gli Estensi, in epoca rinascimentale, amavano cacciare in questi luoghi, dove eressero il maestoso Castello della Mesola, oggi sede del Museo del Cervo. Nella Riserva si trovano tre percorsi di diverse lunghezze, che variano dall'una alle tre ore di percorrenza lungo i quali si possono osservare i cervi, oggi affiancati da numerosi Daini, specie di recente introduzione. Interessante anche la Testuggine di palude che si può facilmente osservare lungo i canali che attraversano il bosco. Molto comune anche la Testuggine terrestre, oggetto di un programma di protezione. L'avifauna è rappresentata da vari tipi di Silvidi come la Cinciarella, la Cinciallegra, la Capinera, l'Usignolo, il Rampichino, il Rigogolo e il Frosone, solo per citarne alcuni. Sono presenti poi il Picchio rosso e il Picchio verde, l'Upupa e una numerosa colonia stanziale di Colombaccio. Cinque sono le specie di rapaci notturni che solitamente frequentano il bosco: il Barbagianni, la Civetta, il Gufo comune, l'Allocco e l'Assiolo. Il periodo migliore per visitare il bosco è senza dubbio la primavera, quando il canto degli uccelli raggiunge il massimo della sonorità.
