Basilica di Santa Maria del Popolo, risalente al Quattrocento, arricchita e modificata nel corso dei secoli dall'intervento di numerosi architetti e artisti. Al suo interno conserva straordinari capolavori: la Cappella Chigi, realizzata su progetto di Raffaello dal 1513, terminata tra il 1652 e il 1656 con l’intervento di Gian Lorenzo Bernini; la Cappella Cerasi, che ospita la Crocifissione di San Pietro e la Conversione di San Paolo, opere di Caravaggio; la pala d’altare raffigurante l’Assunzione della Vergine di Annibale Carracci e la Cappella del Presepio o della Rovere, realizzata dall’architetto Andrea Bregno, tra la fine del Quattrocento e l’inizio del Cinquecento, decorata con magnifici affreschi attribuiti a Pinturicchio e alla sua bottega. La leggenda narra che sul Colle degli Ortuli, dove sorge la Basilica, vi sia la tomba maledetta di Nerone, l’imperatore morto suicida, le cui ceneri vennero sepolte in un’urna di porfido sotto un noce. Vicino all’altare maggiore della chiesa sono presenti dei bassorilievi che ricordano la vicenda.
