Wodaabe shepherds with their flock (Chad). HUMANKIND, my premium, limited-edition, museum-quality standard book featuring over 200 large-format photos. Available on my website: https://robertopazziphoto.com The Wodaabe are a nomadic pastoralist group living mainly in the Sahel regions of Chad. They are part of the larger Fulani people, but they maintain a very traditional lifestyle centered on cattle herding and seasonal migration across dry grasslands in search of water and pasture. Their way of life is closely tied to the rhythms of nature, and mobility is essential for their survival in the harsh environment of the Sahel. Cattle are not only an economic resource for the Wodaabe but also a central element of their cultural identity and social structure. Wealth and status are often measured by the size and health of one’s herd, and livestock play an important role in marriage arrangements and community relationships. The Wodaabe follow a code of behavior known as pulaaku, which emphasizes values such as self control, modesty, patience, and respect for others. One of the most distinctive aspects of Wodaabe culture is their focus on beauty and appearance, especially among men. This is most visible during traditional gatherings and ceremonies, such as the Gerewol festival, where men dress in elaborate costumes, paint their faces with bright colors, and perform dances to attract female partners. These performances highlight ideals of beauty that include tall stature, bright eyes, and white teeth, and they reflect the importance of courtship and social bonds within the community. Despite increasing pressures from climate change, modernization, and political instability in the region, many Wodaabe continue to preserve their nomadic traditions and cultural practices. Their resilience and strong cultural identity make them one of the most fascinating pastoral societies in Africa. What wonderful photos. The thing I find most unique about your photos is the interaction with people. The look on the face of these two guys and their amused expression... But how do you do it?

Thank you Guido!
By nature and out of curiosity, I like to invest my time in creating relationships of trust with the communities and individuals I meet. Depending on the different situations, it can be a matter of a few hours, days or in rare cases weeks.
In this way, in addition to getting my presence "accepted" and seen as something natural, I also have the opportunity to know more details of the specific cultures/traditions that I then try to tell with my photographs.
