Fossoli ebbe una "vita" un po' diversa da altri campi di detenzione, oltre che una Vita successiva. Originariamente fu campo di detenzione - gestito dal Regio Esercito - per dissidenti e prigionieri anglo-americani dal Nord Africa sino al fatidico 8 settembre 1943; subito dopo, passò sotto il controllo misto nazifascista, e venne deputato in zone miste a detenere ebrei, destinati ai lager fuori Italia, ed altri detenuti. Non fu campo di sterminio, vi furono esecuzioni sommarie ad opera dei nuovi gestori ma serviva a smaltire, mi si passi il termine, il numero degli espatriandi verso i campi di lavoro e sterminio. Una volta raggiunta una certa quota, si mandavano le persone al loro destino e si ripristinava un nuovo afflusso. A guerra terninata, fu destinato a luogo di detenzione di indesiderabili, sfollati, soldati ex nazisti e repubblichini , detenuti per reati comuni sino al 1947 circa; la nuova Vita ebbe i germogli con la costituzione di Nomadelfia, qui, ad opera di Don Zeno Saltini nell'Opera dei Piccoli Apostoli sino al 1952, poi dal 1954 e sino al 1970 raccolse i profughi giuliani e dalmati, che in parte si stabilirono nei dintorni ed i restanti poterono ritornare nei luoghi di origine.
