Aristarco è un cratere collocato sull’altopiano omonimo circondato dalle pianure dell’Oceano delle Tempeste. Il cratere presenta una albedo marcata, tanto da renderlo ben distinguibile per la sua luminosità. Ciò è dovuto al fatto che è un cratere di recente formazione, circa 450 milioni di anni. Ha un diametro di circa 40km ed è profondo 2,7km. Nella foto il fondo del cratere è ancora immerso della notte lunare, pertanto non è visibile il picco centrale. Più a ovest (nella foto il nord è a destra) è visibile il cratere Herodotus che presenta il fondo piatto in quanto innondato di lava, caratteristica analoga al cratere Prinz. A nord di Herodotus inizia Vallis Schröteri, una valle lunga 160km di origine vulcanica. La zona è stata oggetto di numerose osservazioni di Transient Lunar Phenomenon (TLP) un cambiamento di breve durata della luce della superficie della Luna. Ancora più a nord i primi raggi di Sole, ancora basso sull’orizzonte, illumina il monte Herodotus alto circa un chilometro. Poco distante è visibile la catena montuosa dei Montes Agricola lunga circa 160km. In basso nella foto i monti Harbinger proiettano le loro ombre sulla pianura sottostante.
