I "treni della felicità" iniziativa spontanea di un gruppo di donne che trasportassero bambini e bambine, il futuro di un Paese da ricostruire. Il primo convoglio partì dalla capitale nel gennaio del 1946. Non era più un treno di morte come i convogli dei deportati, ma ricostruiva la vita. Nell’immediato dopoguerra, per anni, migliaia di famiglie del centro-nord aprirono le proprie case a bambine e bambini provenienti dalle zone più povere e più colpite dalla guerra. Occorreva superare pregiudizi e paure, vincere le resistenze delle famiglie d’origine spaventate. I bambini trovarono nelle nuove città cose mai viste: l’acqua corrente nelle case, le lenzuola profumate nel letto, la carne sulla tavola. Ricevettero cure e vaccini. Impararono a leggere e a scrivere. Quando tornarono a casa i bambini e le bambine raccontarono della prima volta che videro il mare, del primo gelato della vita, della cioccolata, raccontavano di aver vissuto in un altro mondo: "Mi sembrava di essere in una favola, dentro quel treno. Vedevo tutte queste luci nel mare che rispecchiavano, e io non potevo riuscire a capire che cos’erano, perché non avevo mai sentito che c’era il mare." (Erminia, sette anni).
