I Boes e Merdules sono maschere tipiche del carnevale di Ottana, un paese della provincia di Nuoro nel Centro Sardegna. Rappresentano il Bue (Boe) ed il pastore (Merdule), nella lotta tra uomo e animale, al fine della sopravvivenza, e determina il dominio dell'uomo sull'animale. Nelle esibizioni carnevalesche, il Boe viene inseguito, frustato e catturato dal Merdule, recitando furiose risse. La sfilata dei Boes e dei Merdules di Ottana è una pantomima del comportamento dell'uomo con gli animali (i buoi). --- SU BOE (IL BUE) - La maschera richiama la figura taurina, sulla fronte è intagliata una stella, in dialetto “s'istedda”. Sulle guance sono intagliate due foglie. I colori usati sulla maschera tipicamente sono il rosso, il verde e il nero, questo perchè questi colori naturali erano di facile reperibilità in natura. Indossa pelli di pecora bianche, un grappolo di campanacci tenuto insieme da una cintura in cuoio posta su una spalla a tracolla, indossa gambali dello stesso tipo di pelle. ----- Su Merdule (“Padrone del Bue”) - La parola Merdule è la contrazione di “Mere 'e su ule” che tradotto significa “Padrone del Bue”. Indossa pelli bianche e gambali dello stesso colore, porta sulle spalle una sacca in pelle, chiamata sa bertula. Porta con se un bastone che viene chiamato “Su Matzuccu”. Il compito del Merdule è quello di dominare Su Boe. Il rapporto fra l'uomo e l'animale risulta essere una costante del mondo agropastorale da cui il carnevale prende spunto, raccontando scene di vita quotidiana di questo contesto quando durante le sfilate le maschere si fermano a inscenare piccoli momenti in cui il bue si ribella e il padrone cerca di domarlo.
