Situate vicino al villaggio di Chamerel, sul versante sud-occidentale dell'isola di Mauritius, nel distretto Riviere Noire, si trovano le "Sette terre colorate", che sembrano dipinte con un pennello per via della morbidezza delle ondulazioni del terreno e dei suoi meravigliosi colori. Le "Terres de couleurs" sono dune di sabbia e roccia, tinteggiate di rosso, marrone, viola, verde, blu, azzurro e giallo, che occupano un'area di circa 7500 metri quadrati rendendola una spettacolare tavolozza di colori. Il fenomeno della varietà cromatica è ricondotto al raffreddamento, a diverse temperature e in diversi momenti temporali, delle rocce vulcaniche che, decomposte ed erose, insieme all'argilla, nel corso dei secoli hanno dato luogo alla formazione della sabbia che, per l'alta presenza di ferro ed alluminio nel terreno ed alla loro ossidazione, ha i colori prevalenti del rosso-antracite e del blu-violaceo. Assolutamente da non perdere se vi dovesse capitare di trovarvi da quelle parti.
