Bella cattura con un buon dettaglio complessivo.
Anche dalla tipologia di costruzione delle cellette più che un ape mi sembra una vespa, ma non vorrei sbagliarmi

Come è già stato fatto notare, non è un'ape l'imenottero fotografato ma bensì una vespa del genere Polistes, direi una:
Polistes gallicus (una delle specie più comuni)
Le api in genere hanno il corpo più piccolo e tozzo, ricoperto da una peluria +/- fitta. Le vespe non hanno peli, hanno una colorazione vivace e sono molto più snelle (zampe + lunghe) delle cugine api. Questi sono i caratteri distintivi più evidenti. Anche il nido è molto differente da quello delle api.
