Salendo lungo la forcella Lavaredo sul fianco destro delle Tre Cime si giunge al rifugio Locatelli che offre una vista privilegiata sul famoso trittico dolomitico. Se si sale ancora un po' alle spalle del rifugio, ci si trova al cospetto di uno spettacolo naturale inatteso. Alla vista si apre una vallata di poco sottostante denominata Rastplaz. Sembra un'oasi, composta da due laghi alpini, incastonata in un paesaggio che tutt'attorno è brullo, roccioso, lunare e che assume quasi l'aspetto di una pianura nel bel mezzo di un deserto ruvido di roccia e pietra.
