Fu edificato tra il 1860 e il 1865 su progetto dell'architetto Antoine-Nicolas Bailly (1810-1892), su ordine dell'imperatore Napoléone III. - Il palazzo in secondo piano (con le torri) è la Conciergerie, un palazzo storico di Parigi inglobato nel grande complesso del Palazzo di Giustizia, situato nella parte settentrionale dell'Île de la Cité, nei pressi della Sainte-Chapelle, nel I arrondissement.
