Portrait of a Bai woman working on the traditional batik (China). The Bai are an East Asian ethnic group who live mostly in the Yunnan Province. They have a long and colorful history and tradition. Unlike many other ethnic groups, they have long been sophisticated about business, education, and trade and built large complex ancient towns with advanced technology for their times. The Bai constitute one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by China, with a population of around 2 million. The Bai people of Yunnan Province are known for their beautiful batik, a traditional wax-resist dyeing art. This craft has been passed down through generations. Artisans draw delicate patterns on white cotton cloth using melted wax and then dye the fabric with natural indigo. When the wax is removed, white designs appear on a deep blue background. Bai batik is used for clothing, scarves, and home decorations. It reflects the Bai people's creativity and strong connection to their cultural heritage. Today, it is recognized as part of China's Intangible Cultural Heritage.
