Il Fischione Turco (Netta Rufina) è diffuso in tutta l'Europa Occidentale compresa la penisola Italiana, in particolar modo nella Pianura Padana e in Sardegna, anche se è estremamente più numeroso nella zona che parte dal Mar Nero e dalla Turchia Orientale fino al Nordovest della Cina. Presenta un carattere gregario e per questo si mescola spesso ad altri uccelli selvaggi radunandosi in numero considerevole nei terreni in cui sono soliti svernare e fare la muta. Predilige ambienti umidi, come le paludi, in cui può facilmente trovare il suo cibo preferito: le piante acquatiche.
