Nata nel XIV secolo, dagli architetti Tino di Camaino e Francesco de Vito, come arteria per favorire il trasporto dei materiali necessari alla costruzione della Certosa di San Martino, la Pedamentina venne più volte dotata di sistemi di difesa contro chi intendeva assediare Castel Sant'Elmo, evolvendosi nei secoli fino a essere ricoperta di scale e assumere l'aspetto odierno. È questa la prima strada mai costruita sulla collina: i quartieri dell'Arenella e del Vomero erano allora solo una stesa di monasteri, casali e campi coltivati e il Castello e la Certosa dominavano in solitudine sul golfo di Napoli. Percorrendo la Pedamentina, dunque, è possibile ammirare non soltanto un panorama spettacolare sul golfo, ma anche gli orti e i giardini della Certosa: unica è la vista su tutto il centro storico di Napoli con Santa Chiara e Spaccanapoli ben riconoscibili dall'alto dei gradoni.
