La chiesa romanica di Santa Maria Assunta venne eretta agli inizi del XII secolo, molto probabilmente sui resti di una chiesa preesistente. Nel secolo XV venne ampliata con l'aggiunta di due navate laterali che però non presentavano la precedente decorazione romanica, infatti sono prive di archetti ciechi. Nella facciata della chiesa tutti i peducci degli archetti ciechi sono protomi umane; quelle sparse sui muri della chiesa nuova ed altre andate disperse ci assicurano che con ogni probabilità l'intera decorazione era costituita, con poche eccezioni, di esse.
